Game rules
If you have questions about the game rules or about Betapet in general we kindly ask you to first check if your question is answered under the menu option FAQ. If you cannot find the answer to your question here try to ask in the member forum.
The tiles
There is a total of 100 lettered tiles, of which two are jokers. Each letter occurs a set number of times and gives a set number of points. The joker tiles has no points, but can instead be set to any letter. The letter which is set on the joker tile cannot be changed during the continuation of the game. The joker is selected by hovering the mouse pointer above the tile and holding the left mouse button down approximately 1-2 seconds, then select the letter and release the mouse button.
The board
The game board is 15x15 tiles. The game board consists of normal tiles and bonus tiles (the placement of the tiles depends on the board chosen during game setup).
These squares gives double and triple score for each lettered tile which are placed on them.
These squares gives double and triple word score for each lettered tile which are placed on them. NOTICE: The bonus score can only be given once for which a lettered tile is placed on these squares. After this the square gives no bonus.
There are three kinds of game boards: standard, special and random. The standard board is as it sounds. The special board has a different kind of design and additional bonus squares while the random board has a set number of bonus squares which are randomly placed on the board.
A game round
Each player begins with seven lettered tiles on his or her hand. The other tiles are placed in a "tile bag". The number of tiles in each player hand is seven until there are no more tiles left in the bag which can be given out to each player.
In each round the player can chose between exchanging tiles, passing or by placing the lettered tiles on the game board. You can only exchange tiles if there are seven or more tiles left in the "tile bag". To change a tile place it on the game board and press "swap". Passing is done by pressing the corresponding button. If the player choses to place the lettered tiles on the board a score is awarded for each word that has been formed. Each score from a word is calculated by summation of each value on each tile (taking into account if the tile has been placed on a bonus square).
To create new words
The player which forms the first word have to place one of the tiles on the square located in the middle of the board. This square gives the player forming the first word a double word score. Words hereafter can be formed in the following ways:

In this example ABOUT is formed so that AL, BE and OR also is formed. Also, more than one word is created in the same turn and each word is awarded accordingly. The common letter values are summed for each word. For example the A in AL and ABOUT gives one point to each respective word.

Which words are OK?
Betapet follows the rules established by international community, this also decides what kind of word list that should be used. This means words can be conjugated depending on the word list used. Betapet uses the SOWPODS and OSPD word lists.
Bingo
If a player is able to use all lettered tiles on his or her hand in one turn this is called a bingo. A bingo is awarded with an extra of 50 points which are added to the total score for that player.
When the game ends
The game is ended when no tiles are left in the "tile bag" and at the same time one player has no tiles left in his or her hand. The game is also ended if all the players pass three rounds in a row (exchanging tiles is also considered a pass).
Score deduction/-addition
If a player has tiles left when the game has ended he or she is penalized. For example a D and a Q left at the hand gives 2+10=12 points in deduction from the players end score. The player which has no tiles left recieves a bonus which is the sum of all the other players penalty deduction.
Time deduction
A player can receive time deduction when the game ends if the time limit of the game is exceeded. This time limit depends on the game time set at setup: Rush (12 minutes), Stress (20 minutes), Fast (30 minutes), Normal (60 minutes) or Unlimited (no time limit).
For each minute begun the player is penalized by a 10 point deduction. An exception is the Rush mode where the user is penalized by a 10 point deduction for each 15 seconds which the player exceeds the limit.
A game ends automaticaly if one of the players has five minutes over the time limit.
